The exhibition Minor Tides brings together for the first time the artists Lina Geoushy (*1990), Sarah Jade Sulli van (*1995) and Farren van Wyk (*1993), presenting each of their most important projects to date. All three artists focus on portraiture in their photographic practice, using it as a powerful tool for representing collective identity, but also as an instrument for critically re-examining his tory and reclaiming it for the present.
Together, these three works from Minor Tides approach portraiture as a site of resistance rather than simple representation. Whether through Sullivan’s intimate gestures of concealment, Geoushy’s cinematic acts of historical reclamation, or van Wyk’s confrontation with racial classification, each image uses the portrait to question how identity is shaped, inherited, and reimagined.
