Regen Projects presents Holding Blue, an exhibition of new photographs and sculptures by American artist Catherine Opie, on view from May 28 to July 3, 2026, at the gallery’s Los Angeles space. The exhibition marks Opie’s twelfth presentation with Regen Projects and continues her long-standing exploration of photography as both a formal medium and a tool for observing the social, physical, emotional, and political world.

In this new body of work, Opie turns her attention to the Norwegian landscape, especially the mountains, fjords, light, architecture, and atmosphere of Norway during the Arctic winter. Through large-scale photographs and ceramic sculptures, she reflects on time, memory, embodiment, place, mourning, and the fragile beauty of the natural world.

At the center of Holding Blue is Opie’s encounter with the distinctive blue light of the Arctic Circle during the polar winter.

The exhibition’s title suggests both an act of preservation and an emotional state: to “hold” blue may mean to capture a color, to remain with a feeling, or to preserve a fleeting visual experience that cannot fully be possessed. The blue that dominates Opie’s Norway photographs is not simply a visual effect. It becomes a way of thinking about temporality, memory, grief, and ecological vulnerability.

For Opie, the deep ultramarine tone of the landscape records an actual experience of light, but it also carries symbolic and emotional weight. It evokes mourning for a natural world increasingly under threat, while also connecting her work to a long art-historical tradition in which blue has been associated with spirituality, transcendence, melancholy, and immensity.
